If you live in a small apartment, maintaining cleanliness can be a daunting task. However, with the right strategy, it can turn into a manageable routine. Deep cleaning involves thorough cleaning beyond regular dusting and sweeping, tackling often neglected areas and disinfecting surfaces. This guide will walk you through a comprehensive deep cleaning process for your small apartment.

Deep Cleaning the Kitchen

Start with the hub of your home – the kitchen. Empty the cabinets, drawers, and pantry and wipe the insides using a microfiber cloth dampened with warm soapy water. Use an all-purpose cleaner for stubborn grime. Don’t forget the top of cabinets and surfaces over the stove, where grease can build up.

Clean the oven using a paste made from baking soda and water. Apply the paste inside and leave overnight. Wipe it clean the next day using a damp cloth, then use a vinegar-soaked cloth to remove the residues.

For the microwave, a solution of water and vinegar in a microwavable bowl removed can clean it in minutes. Microwave for about five minutes, and let the steam loosen the dirt, then wipe the microwave clean.

Disinfect your countertops, cutting boards, kitchen sink, faucet, and handles. A solution of hydrogen peroxide or vinegar can effectively disinfect these surfaces.

Next, tackle the refrigerator. Start by emptying and discarding expired products. Use a mixture of baking soda and water to scrub shelves and storage compartments.

Deep Cleaning the Living Room

Move your focus onto the living room. Vacuum upholstery, beneath cushions and all fabric items including curtains, to remove dust. Use the crevice tool on your vacuum cleaner to clean corners and seams of your furniture and around baseboards.

Sanitize remote controls, light switches, doorknobs, and other high-touch surfaces. Remove everything from the shelves and dust using a microfiber cloth. Clean light fixtures and ceiling fans, remembering to clean both sides of the fan blades.

Clean the windows using a window glass cleaner, starting top-down. Dust off the blinds, and clean the window sills and tracks.

Your floors might need individual attention based on the type. For carpets, consider hiring a professional cleaner or renting a machine. Tile or wood floors can be mopped with a suitable cleaner.

Deep Cleaning the Bedroom

In the bedroom, start by washing all bedding, including duvet covers, mattress pads, and pillows. Vacuum your mattress and use spot cleaners for any stains.

Organize your closet. Remove everything, vacuum the floor and wipe shelves clean before putting everything back in order.

Depend on a microfiber cloth and an appropriate cleaner for mirrors and glass surfaces to avoid streaks.

Clean under the bed, vacuuming or wiping down the area depending on your floor.

Deep Cleaning the Bathroom

In the bathroom, start by removing all products so you can clean every surface. Scrub the bathtub and shower walls using a bathroom surface cleaner.

Pour a toilet cleaner into the bowl, let it sit as per instructions, then scrub and flush. Wipe the seat, lid, and outer surface with a disinfectant.

Clean your faucet and sink with a mild cleaner to avoid scratching.

For grout, use a mixture of baking soda and water, scrub with a toothbrush, and rinse thoroughly.

Lastly, mop the floor, starting from the corner furthest from the door and moving towards it.

Deep Cleaning Other Areas

For other areas, and particularly small spaces, use a microfiber duster. It can reach small crevices and it attracts dust effectively. Don’t forget areas like vents, window tracks, and underneath appliances.

A steam cleaner can effectively clean and kill bacteria on different surfaces, including couches, carpets, and mattresses.

Remember, deep cleaning doesn’t have to be done all at once. You can clean different areas on different days. After deep cleaning, a well-maintained cleaning routine will keep your small apartment in good condition and make the next deep cleaning session easier.
